Red-figure vase painting is one of the most important styles of figural Greek vase painting. The style was developed by experienced potters and painters in Athens around 530 BC and remained in use until the late 3rd century BC. Its modern name is based on the figural depictions in red colour on a black background. For several hundred years It was used in decorating different types of vases and urns.
Black-figure pottery painting was especially common between the 7th and 5th centuries BC. Figures and ornaments were painted on the body of the vessel using shapes and colors reminiscent of silhouettes. Delicate contours were incised into the paint before firing, and details could be reinforced and highlighted with opaque colors. The principal centers for this style were Corinth and later Athens and other Greek cities.
In white-ground pottery, the vase is covered with a light or white slip of kaolinite. White-ground vases were produced in Ionia, Laconia and on the Cycladic islands. But only in Athens did it develop into a veritable separate style beside black-figure and red-figure vase painting. For that reason, the term white-ground pottery or white-ground vase painting is usually used in reference to the Attic material only.

Beware: Because of the popularity of ancient Greek vases many companies simply mass produce a vase and then apply silk screen printing. In addition, during recent months large vase copies are marketed in Greece, but unfortunately they are “Made in China”. So you could pay a large sum for a vase, while the actual value is much less.
-
Quality: To create Greek pottery the artist uses clay and a levigation process to remove pebbles and impurities. Next the clay is placed on a wheel to shape it followed by hand painting of the figures and decorative features. When a vase is hand painted the same figure in 100 vases will each be slightly different. Unlike silk screening and stenciling it’s not possible for two hand made and painted vases to be 100% identical.
